Dewint House, Tappan, NY

On June 25, the chapter held a meeting at the historical Dewint House in Tappan, NY. It is one of the oldest surviving structures in Rockland County having been built in 1700 and is an outstanding example of Hudson Valley Dutch Colonial architecture. It served as George Washington’s headquarters three times during the Revolution including the trial of Major Andre. We were treated to a tour by the caretaker who related many interesting facts about life at the house during that time as well as the work to restore the house to the way it was when George Washington visited. Following the tour, we had an outdoor meeting and picnic lunch under the trees.

Bergen County Historical Society’s Historic New Bridge Landing

On April 24, 2022, The Polly Wyckoff-David Demarest Chapter set up a table at the Bergen County Historical Society’s Historic New Bridge Landing to provide information on the DAR. They were celebrating Native American History with Chwame Gischuch, Under the Shad Moon. There were demonstrations of how fiber is separated from plants to be hand-spun into twine, and the cracking of rocks as they are worked into tools with antler, wood and other stones.

New Jersey State Conference

In April 2022, Deborah Powell, Marilyn Neagle, Wendy Cummings, and Judith Fisher attended the NJDAR spring conference in the Princeton area. It was great to be in person after the Covid shutdown. Co-Author with her husband Kevin Wright and Polly Wyckoff-David Demarest member Deborah Powell presented their book “The Bridge That Saved A Nation” to the NSDAR Historian General, Laura McCrillis Kessler. It is being donated in the memory of our former Regent Jean Duncan Thiel. “The Bridge That Saved A Nation” chronicles New Bridge Landing and the surrounding area, from its early geographic formation and the native communities and colonial settlements that followed, through the turmoil of The American Revolution and the modern day efforts to preserve New Bridge Landing in River Edge.

Remembering Jean Thiel

The Polly Wyckoff-David Demarest Chapter came together at the Bergen County Historical Society where Regent Marilyn Neagle presented a check to Carol Restivo, President of the BCHS in honor of our former regent Jean Thiel. The check will support the Bergen County Historical Society’s New Bridge Landing Wright Museum project. Her name will be engraved on a plaque that will be displayed on the kiosk until the new museum is built where it will be moved to the permanent donor wall inside.

NJDAR Women's Issue Project B.O.S.S.

The Polly Wyckoff-David Demarest Chapter teamed up with the Weehawken High School Student Council to collect donations for the NJDAR Women’s Issue Project B.O.S.S. “Bags of Self Sureness” to be delivered to Ellen McGuire at the Center for Hope and Safety, “Rebuilding lives after Domestic Violence” in Rochelle Park, NJ. We collected, assembled, and donated over 50 bags.
